“New Trustees for Mysmallhelp UK”

Mysmallhelp would like to welcome the new trustees Angela Must, Iain Jawad, Anne Sinik, John Sinik and Philippa Loates to the Mysmallhelp UK trustee board.

Mysmallhelp Nepal fundraised an additional Rs. 10,000 (£87) to cover the remaining cost of the bio-gas system.

Mysmallhelp Nepal had estimated Rs. 25,000 (£218) for installing a Bio Gas system at Marybert school and orphanage. Unfortunately this figure was heavily under-estimated and would only cover 46% of the total costs. After a discussion with the Headmistress of Marybert it has been agreed that Marybert School and Orphanage will provide an additional Rs. 19,000 (£166) and Rs. 10,000 (£87) has been donated by the company Sahayog Nepal Pvt. Ltd. (www.sahayognepal.com)to cover the remaining costs,

Project Updates

Providing school resources such as sports equipment and stationery at Bhattedanda School.

General Description of Bhattedanda school and area

Bhattedanda lies on the outskirts of the Laltipur district, 26km south of Kathmandu. It might not seem a big distance, however, due to roads that are often ruined by landslides or due simply to the lack of any roads at all, the place is barely accessible. The main occupation of the people living there is farming and the level of illiteracy among the inhabitants is as high as 70% of the total population in the village.

Bhattedanda school is a very small school with 3 classrooms of a very basic construction. The school building, designed for about 20 children is packed with 44 students, aged 3 to 12 years old. There are only 3 desks so the children mainly work on the floor. During the monsoon season, the classrooms are awash with water caused by leaks from the roof. Further, there are no toilets and very few school resources of any kind such as books, stationery and sports equipment.

Our aim
Having seen the condition of the school, Mysmallhelp Nepal has decided to help the school and continue to do so in the future.

So far….

Mysmallhelp has:
• Provided school uniforms for all 44 children.
• Provided sweaters to all the children for the cold winter season as well as more clothes.
• Donated 4 blackboards, 45 school bags, stationery and sports equipment.

Outcome of the overall Project
Standard of education increased due to continuous support from MySmallHelp and the School's Committee.
• Increase in admission for the Year 2009 by 64%.
• Average total of students who passed their exams is now 87.77%.
• With the overview of all these above points, the government has decided to appoint one more teacher to the School.

This help has not only brought excitement into the children’s eyes but it has also enabled up to generate some hope for the teachers of the school.

Potential Future Projects
Seeing the importance of this school and the progress in the village, the Village Development Committee has provided Rs 100,000 and the District Development Committee has provided Rs 50,000 to build a new school with the help of the villagers and the funds. They have nearly finished the first level but due to the tight budget, there are not enough funds to fully complete the first level so the school committee is looking for donors. MySmallHelp Nepal, believes that providing funds for the completion of this school would be a potential project for the near future.

Bio-gas system for Marybert school and Orphanage

The construction of the bio-gas system at Marybert School has started and it is expected to be completed by 1st October. The technician from Everest Bio-gas has measured and is now monitoring the area. This project is extremely important for Mysmallhelp as, upon its completion, we will get both the fuel for cooking in the orphanage as well as helping to protect our environment in order to make our hometown a cleaner place. This is an environmentally friendly and sustainable project which we feel is the right investment for the future of Nepal.

Barhamayami school, Chatturale Village

Our aim is:
To build 2 separate toilet facilities for boys and girls.
To provide safe drinking water and storage water for sanitation.

We discussed the renovation with the Project Manager at Chatturale Village. We also discussed whether the funds are going to the right project. He assured us that this is an essential project and that the funds will hugely benefit the children and also the school. Photographs of our visit to Chatturale Village can be seen on our website.

Work already completed:
1. The construction of safe drinking water.
2. Safety tank. toilet for boys and girls are under construction

Child Labour Suitation in Nepal by Kan Yan
In August I had the opportunity to visit Mysmallhelp Nepal while filming a documentary about child labor. The organization's President Raju was kind enough to show me some places around Kathmandu where children were working. We visited children turning bricks, making food, washing dishes, and fixing trucks.
