Background
information about the project
Marybert School
and Orphanage is situated
in Kathmandu and is MSH’s
pioneer project. At present
there are approximately 100
children studying at the school
and 23 of these children are
living at the orphanage. MSH
sponsors 17 children living
at the Marybert orphanage.
The sponsorship pays for their
education, food, accommodation
and sanitary living conditions.
In addition, MSH has built
a library for the school and
has donated many books. The
library has a peaceful atmosphere
and the books are clearly
displayed.
MSH has also funded a bio-gas
system that is complete and
running very well. This has
provided the orphanage with
a gas to the kitchen for the
2 meals a day that they serve,
and have been saving an expensive
gas cylinder. The bio-gas
system runs on human waste
and has a 5 year guarantee
that covers any faults. The
engineer hired by MSH will
ensure that the Marybert knows
how the system works and how
to maintain it.
Donation
of a computer and installing
of internet connection to
Marybert School
MSH is always looking
to improve educational standards
and proposed that Marybert
School is provided with a
computer and an internet connection
to enable the children to
learn about ICT and to access
the world outside Nepal through
the internet. This has provided
a link with Knightsbridge
School’s J3 class to
ensure that future correspondence
between the 2 schools can
be maintained. Other accessories
include a webcam and a microphone
so that Marybert School can
communicate live with Knightsbridge
school. Mysmallhelp has also
donated a scanner so that
their work and pictures can
be sent to the children at
Knightsbridge School and a
printer to print off pictures
from the computer. More software
can be donated in the future
and the children will be able
to learn how to use it.
MSH Nepal’s goal is
to help improve the educational
standard of the children of
Marybert School by providing
a computer, internet connection,
a webcam and microphone for
live communication, a scanner
and a printer for sending
children’s work and
pictures to the Knightsbridge
School and printing out any
photos that are received or
taken.
Our
Progress So Far:
The children have
learned how to use the mouse,
became more familiar with
the computer and its components.
The children gained experience
speaking English well and
have gotten confident from
speaking with the children
from UK. They have printed
their photos from the computer
and pasted them on the wall.
They feel privileged and happy
to be able to learn valuable
computer skills with the help
of MySmallHelp and Knightsbridge
School.
Even though there has not
been much communication between
the two schools, the children
at the orphanage have been
able to gain useful experience
in using computers. Occasionally
they have been entertained
by movies, computer games
and printing their materials
like drawings and poems.
The children have shown much
eagerness and interest to
learn more about computers.
Mysmallhelp appointed one
teacher for 3 months for this
project; however because of
the enthusiasm shown by the
children the teacher is happy
to continue teaching the children
computer for at least another
3 months.
