| Blood
donation camp hailed a success... |
 |
MSH ran a second blood donation camp at Quest International
College where 55 students gave the gift of life. It was
a joint venture with Nepal Red Cross. The college principal
said that he welcomes the opportunity to work with us again
in the future and is thrilled that we are helping to educate
the students in the benefits of social responsibility and
that the blood-giving process is not painful. Many of the
students were actively encouraging their friends to donate,
and have urged us to keep organising the camps.

Knight
in shining armour... |
|
 |
|
Knightsbridge School (UK) has been wonderful in its
ongoing efforts to support Mysmallhelp and raised funds
that paid for six new bunk beds for the children at
Marybert School and Orphanage, and also provided enough
money for new wind and waterproof clothing for the 18
resident children. We were also able to provide nearly
150 children at a primary school in Dhulikhel with new
stationery (jotters, pencils, erasers, sharpeners).
Whilst such contributions might be considered small
in the Western world a child from a poor family in Nepal
is more likely to be withdrawn from education if his
or her family can’t afford to buy them what they
need to attend. These contributions go far in ensuring
that children in Nepal can remain in education and create
a more sustainable future for themselves. Knightsbirdge
School’s fundraising donations also mean that
we have an ongoing project to supply new school blackboards,
benches , desks and some school uniforms to a secondary
school in Kathmandu. |

Sport
raises funds for Marybert
In
January our current volunteer Jo Young (Scotland)
organised a football game for the children at Marybert
School and Orphanage as her friend from Italy (Mattia
Marzaro) was visiting Nepal and was keen to meet
the children, and show his footballing prowess.
The children loved learning new tricks and techniques,
and are still putting them into practice. Mattia
has since raised more than £200 for the school
by collecting from the musical cast where he works.

Children capture history...

In March MSH organised
a trip to the museum at Basantapur, Kathmandu for
the resident children of Marybert School but our best
laid plans went to waste as load shedding caused the
museum to close early. However, we were determined
to have a fun and educational day so we drew pictures
of the temples, taught the children that a contingency
plan is always useful, enjoyed some snacks together
and generally bonded before squeezing back into local
transport and returning to Lalitpur (very very tired
but very very happy).

Mysmallhelp welcomes new partner
company

The first quarter of 2011 has already proven to be
a busy and successful time for the Mysmallhelp team
in Nepal. We have moved offices to a brighter and
warmer location where we now have running water and
bathroom facilities. It has also given us enough space
to incorporate the Mysmalldesign team who are now
officially ready to launch the company website. MSD
is a group of innovative and creative web designers
(and printing materials) who hope to attract international
clients (see www.mysmalldesign.com.np) so that they
can run a viable commercial business and donate 10%
of all profits back to Mysmallhelp. Check out the
website and if you like what you see recommend the
team to all your friends. We need to generate business
and make ourselves known in the marketplace. We have
competitive rates, efficient turnaround, and remember
that some of the profits are diverted to the children
who need it most.

Creative projects...
Jo Young (volunteer) also designed a couple of projects
for the children at Marybert School and Orphanage
to enjoy. This involved the children choosing a number
of random props and then taking or posing for abstract
photographs. The idea behind this was to promote creativity,
confidence, and to encourage them to step out of their
normal worlds for long enough to gain new perspective.
The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves (as is
evidenced by the photographs!). The second part of
the project was called I love you because... and was
created to help the children appreciate gratitude
and to see beauty in the mundane. We bought them new
school jotters (with funds raised by Jo Young) and
asked them to create a cover page with their name
on it before inviting their friends to write a short
paragraph (or illustrate) the reasons why they love
them. We thought this was a special way to highlight
the children’s special and unique qualities
whilst also giving them some confidence about their
positive attributes. Some of the comments that we
saw were also very sweet such as; “I love you
because... you are good at skipping and you help me
with my reading, “ and, “You are always
smiling and I think that is very nice.” Photographs
and extracts from the I love you because... project
will be displayed next month when Marybert has a number
of special performances and exhibitions for parents,
and for members of the local community.

Teaching
for teachers...
Meanwhile the teachers at Marybert School and Orphanage
have been busy masterminding their skills and talents
to share with other teachers who haven’t had
the benefit of such solid grounding in childcare and
early years education. This project is still in the
planning stages but we anticipate that a team of teachers
from Marybert will have training days with other teachers
to share their ideas on discipline, creative play,
child centred education, creative writing, working
one on one (teacher and child) and group work. There
will be opportunity for an open discussion about the
day and about what might happen next to make the partnership
approach more fruitful and meaningful.

| Volunteers... |

Mysmallhelp has recently had some accountancy
advice and assistance from Andy Reynolds and Kate
Baker (England) who shared some of his skillset with
the team. Andy was also providing some assistance
to a charity in Pokhara. Meantime Jo Young is still
with us; Jo joined in November 2010 and hopes to remain
with us for the next few weeks. Jo has a background
in journalism and public relations and has been helping
with the set up of Mysmalldesign, general communications
work, and spending time with the children. |
